My Purse – Objects
My Purse are Una Jongenelis, Sara Elzinga, Keetje Voogd, and Igor Jongenelis, a Dutch four-piece on AT EASE, and “Objects” is their new single. The premise is tight: the song is sung from the perspective of someone who has been kicked out, is standing in the street outside your door, and is leaving things there for you to find. “And when you find them you’ll think of me / You think of me and how I can’t sleep.” The whole lyric runs on a loop of repetition that mirrors the compulsive logic of the situation, each line doubled, the person unable to stop circling back. “Gas gas gas gas gas” arrives near the end and doesn’t need explaining.
It’s a short, focused piece of work and the obsessive repetition in the writing is doing exactly what it should.
